|January 16, 2003||- "Currently, Shawna is in Las Vegas playing in a soccer tournament as a way to pass time as the Survivor hype begins to build." Doesn't sound much like the activities of someone who was starving just four weeks earlier (Heidi, for example, was ravenously eating, and almost hospitalized upon her return).||- San Mateo Daily Journal.|

Area paper lists her (along with Alex and Roger) as a local contestant.
"Shawna Mitchell, a 23-year-old retail clothing saleswoman, grew up in Redwood City. A 1997 graduate of the Menlo School in Atherton, Mitchell graduated from the College of William and Mary. She has worked for R.E.I. in the Bay Area and recently moved to Los Angeles with her dog, Indiana. Her mother, Suzanne, still lives in Redwood City. 'She's a natural girl,' said show host Jeff Probst in an interview Monday at the Television Critics Association meeting in Hollywood. 'You could go on a road trip with her or you could go to the People's Choice awards. There's nothing put-on about her.'"
"TV critics saw the first 20 minutes of the new ``Survivor'' series. After the teams were divided by gender, the members got into boats. Mitchell had trouble untying the line that secured her boat. 'My mind was so jumpy I couldn't even untie a knot,' she says on the show.

Mendoza's pre-game quotes and impressions:
- "Initial impression: Enthusiastic, mature for her age."
- "Who are you? 'I have an endearing side that most people like.'"
- "Strategy: 'Being myself. And I'm a hard worker. I love 'opportunistic exercise.' Some people would see it as building a shelter. I see it as a back and arm workout. Ideally my alliance is going to be with an older man who is complementary.'"
