Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans Episode 4 Power Rankings

The Machiavellian puppet master

This will be a short write-up (short for me*) because out of the 60 minutes of Survivor we had in this episode, 15 went to the immunity challenge, and about 20 were just one big advertisement for a country singer. I’m not going to spend time writing about feeling chicken-fried on a Friday night or whatever the hell he sings about. Greatest reward ever? Sure, who cares about snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, horseback riding up an active volcano, a hot air balloon safari, or a picnic on the Great Wall of China? Kalo got a MAN with a GUITAR! The Zac Brown concert was for me just a step above the Jack and Jill screening only because Adam Sandler himself wasn’t acting out the entire movie. However, this was still my face for the entire first hour of the show:

Sophie enduring Jack & Jill

I’m all for fun rewards, but this one long overstayed its welcome and took a lot of time away from the show I care to see. I think Zac also officially has about the 5th highest confessional count of the season now. I fear even more what we’re in for from Mr. Beast who I suspect will have a more game-impacting inclusion. The fans didn’t enjoy some harmless guitar-playing? I can’t wait for some Beast Bucks or whatever hellish twist he introduces booting a fan favorite from the game.

Aside from Rizo being gifted another boomerang idol from Genevieve who’s turning into Santa Claus this season, we didn’t see anything else that suggested many changes in dynamics on Kalo and Cila. Charlie and Rizo still have bad blood as do Aubry and Genevieve, and Jonathan is still He-Man. The real show finally started only once Vatu got back to camp after that pitifully sad performance at the immunity challenge, so instead of going through the entire cast with, “Same, same, same,” I’m making this a mini power ranking focusing on Vatu. Consider everyone else in a holding pattern until after the next (double!) tribal council.

Angelina Keeley

This was a wild episode for Angelina in terms of her name coming up as the vote. I was fully prepared for Christian to be telling Mike what he wanted to hear to only turn around and vote out Angelina, but then Vatu was flipped upside down, and Angelina once again made it through tribal council with only one vote cast against her.

Angelina could have a lot of options here now that her game has blown up with her #1 ally and friend being blindsided. She could suck up to Christian and tell him she forgives him but still wants to work with him, hoping he protects her with all the power he has. She could go to Stephenie and Ozzy, saying the past is the past and pitch voting out Christian and Emily who have led the last two votes. She could even apologize to Emily for voting for her but pledge new loyalty to the nerd alliance with promise to vote out Stephenie or Ozzy.

Angelina might do all the above, so it’s hard to say which pitch will stick, if any. Ozzy’s pissed, but I think he’ll cool down and won’t end up taking the big revenge swing at Christian. Ozzy’s still going to be fine with Angelina going; Emily’s going to want that even more now, and while Christian may try and defend Angelina, if his pitch to Stephenie is Ozzy, then given the choice between Ozzy and Angelina, Stephenie is going to take more satisfaction in voting for Angelina. This will be another messy vote for Vatu since they’re obviously going to lose immunity with now only one idol up for grabs, but I’m pessimistically predicting Angelina will be their third victim. I only can hope that Cirie is not the second of the night.

Stephenie LaGrossa

Despite being left out of the first vote and being a last-ditch pitch to be included in the second, Stephenie may be relatively safe on Vatu now after the chaos of this last vote. She’s not anyone’s #1 ally but also not anyone’s #1 adversary. Ozzy and Christian have heat between them as do Emily and Angelina, so all Steph has to do is lay low and let those four decide who among them they want to vote out. Stephenie will end up in on whoever’s plan is most favorable to her (likely any plan to vote out Angelina).

Stephenie desperately needs to get off this tribe, though, and with next week’s boot being a double, timing could be right for another swap after that. We’ll be down to 17, so two tribes of 8 plus 1 going to Exile Island would mathematically work. If Stephenie can just survive this next vote, then any new tribe will end up better for here than this one, so I could see her being merge-bound. The only way Stephenie goes next is if somehow the other four patch things up and agree to deal with their shit later, but they all have top-of-mind targets now whose names are not Stephenie.

Emily Flippen

Eek. This makes two weeks in a row where Emily fucked up Christian’s well-crafted, quiet plan. That’s a difficult element of Survivor – playing with someone who you may share a similar goal as but have vastly different visions on how to achieve it. Emily agreed to vote for Mike after hearing Mike was voting for her, but Emily wanted to include Ozzy while Christian insisted that Ozzy would only complicate matters.

Everything worked out with Emily as least escaping the torch snuff, and most of Ozzy’s disdain over being blindsided may be pointed at Christian (since Emily did attempt to tip off Ozzy), but another week of Emily not being able to sit on a secret says to me that last week wasn’t a one-time slip. I’m not 100%, but I think Emily’s odds of surviving the next Vatu vote are okay (I did think she was a goner though until the second Mike vote came out of the urn). After all Christian did to save Emily and turn the tables on Mike, I can’t see Christian suddenly quick to cut her now. Ozzy should understand that Emily voting for Mike was out of self-preservation, and she could also pin the blame on Christian to further smooth things over with Ozzy. That leaves Angelina and Stephenie who surely won’t be coming together to co-lead an Emily campaign, so the ren-faire girl’s safe for now but slipping in Sole Survivor after another messy episode.

Ozzy Lusth

Ozzy said this week that to win Survivor 50, you’ve got to be quick and one step ahead of everyone else – outside of a swimming challenge, I don’t think we’ve exactly seen either from Ozzy. I do still see him trying more and talking us through his thoughts; he’s just slower strategically, especially up against over-thinkers like Christian, Emily, Mike, and Angelina. Ozzy was completely safe for this vote, but not only do I worry what his reaction will inspire Christian and Emily to do – or Angelina if she retaliates against Ozzy’s vote for her – I’m worrying more about him stepping into the game to own it.

We’re still seeing Ozzy playing a few paces behind everyone. If he steps up and secures Stephenie and Emily in voting out Angelina next, then I’ll have some confidence restored that he may be able to take his game into his own hands. However, if he makes nice with Christian and Emily and lets them lead again, then I think that’s what Ozzy will do the rest of the game, and he won’t have the list of moves to his name to win it. The teaser teed up a tense reaction after Tribal, but I don’t think it’ll be enough to ruin his game immediately. Stephenie won’t vote for him, and Emily will try and salvage what she can, so I don’t expect enough numbers to get rid of Ozzy. On top of that, we need a resolution to the Coach vs. Ozzy rivalry that’s been reignited this season, so we should see these boys go head-to-head before we see either of them head to Ponderosa.

Christian Hubicki

Now we know what Christian looks like as a frustrated father.

That scene was hysterical if a little too over-the-top for his own good, but I can completely understand Christian’s frustration over yet another offense by Emily to blow up his game. Not five minutes beforehand, Christian explicitly told Emily not to tell Ozzy about the Mike vote, and as soon as she saw him, Emily blabbed, “Mike!”

I’m still in a bit of shock over Christian sticking with voting out Mike after that misstep. I do worry this was a late-game kind of move made too early, but maybe there was a greater sense that Mike truly would have had everyone lining up later for guest starring roles on his show, making him invulnerable from the vote. Christian has had control of every vote, so there also could’ve been an unconscious urge to make a move on Mike who was trying to take over as puppeteer himself. Mike would’ve cut Christian later, but he was going to be loyal for a bit longer. The same could be said for Emily or Gabby 2.0, though, so it could’ve come down to Mike being a bigger long-term threat to Christian (i.e. jury threat) than Emily which was Mike’s same rationale for protecting Angelina.

Time will tell if having total control of this game will continue working out for Christian or if it will be his downfall. Now having burned both Angelina and Ozzy, one of them will likely make it out of this tribe and will be able to tell everyone else the kind of game Christian is running. Like I said last week – it’s a red flag to be the big frontrunner this early in the season, but he’s still got allies on other beaches even if he leaves Vatu with an enemy or two. We know this season will be bloodied with betrayals, so it’s not like Christian is the only Machiavelli among the cast. He’s just the one who’s been to the most tribal councils.

Mike being snuffed

This was a giant blindside to me up until the very end. In all scenarios I saw happening on Vatu, I’d have guessed Mike to be the safest. Angelina and Stephenie seemed like the obvious boot choices; Ozzy even is bit of a loner, and Emily’s erratic, so assuming Christian would still be calling the shots, I had him open to voting for pretty much anyone except Mike. Then, that one conversation about Gabby changed everything.

This was all shocking since Mike seemed to be playing a smartly subtle game, and especially after Emily word-vomited to Ozzy about the vote, I didn’t think Christian would still consider Mike the most dangerous and least trustworthy, but he did. Mike will be missed for his humor and snark, but I do wonder if this was a “now or never” situation with how seriously the rest of the cast could’ve been over kissing his ass for a The White Lotus cameo. Christian may have been the only one with the balls to blindside Mike since he already cashed in his guest appearance paycheck from season 3.

Christian and (his wife) Emily on The White Lotus

I wish Zac Brown’s cameo on Survivor lasted as short as that “blink and you’ll miss it” moment.

Speaking of missing, there will be no Episode 5 write-up for me as I’ll be traveling, so you may all be spared from a long lamenting over the potential Cirie-Angelina double boot that is making me have nightmares. I’ll be back to talk about Episode 6 and where the remaining players rank after that, assuming I don’t slip and crack my head off the side of a boat and drown. I won’t be vacationing anywhere near water, so the chances of that are hopefully low.
