| Survivor:
Samoa episode 1 detailed immunity challenge spoilers/
speculation |
To
recap from the RC page: Between the
"Meet
the Cast" CBS preview video, Jeff Probst's "Tribal
Council Orientation" and the first series of TV
ads for Survivor: Samoa, there are shots of two
challenges. By process of elimination (and through matching of
Probst's clothes to the shot of Probst revealing the immunity
idol),
this one must be the IC: using
ropes to climb over barriers. Also, the shot of challenge director
John Kirhoffer in the tribal council orientation video has the
barriers in the background (at right).
From the TV Guide Channel preview
ad, it also appears a grouped two-tribe cast photo is taken
right before the IC, also. Not much spoiler value, apart
from seeing the clothes they wore to the challenge.
Again, as pointed out by VolcanicGlass at
Sucks, the videos contain shots of Probst revealing the
tribal immunity idol:

And the challenge itself was explained by John
Kirhoffer on the TV Guide Channel Preview show. We'll use his
words: "THis challenge is called 'Yank Your Hank', and a 'hank'
is a measurement of rope. Um, six players from the tribe will
carry three coils of rope over three increasingly tall, increasingly
steep A-frame walls. Then they race to the platform, pulling
the crate up onto the platform. And once they're there, they
sit down, and the puzzle-solvers - four puzzle-solvers - will
go over, untie the crate, and then use the planks of the crate
itself as the puzzle."
So everyone competes in this one. Solving
the puzzle for Galu are Laura, Kelly, Monica and Shannon. For
Foa Foa the puzzle-solvers are Betsy, Liz, Marisa and Mike. Everyone
else is crossing the barriers. Stage-by-stage vidcaps below.
First up, stage 1 - crossing the A-frame walls:

So
who wins? Galu clearly has a slight lead up to the crate-hauling
stage, and they appear to still be leading at the start of the puzzle
leg, since there are shots of Galu people watching the puzzlers
with no visible Foa Foas in the background (could just be the
camera angle, we guess, but seems unlikely). We'd guess they
manage to pull out the win, mainly due to the above, in combination
with the evidence below.

Ben
is shown back in camp, dressed identically to this challenge,
with his buff worn similarly. And (barring a "selection" of an
opposing player by the IC-winning tribe this episode) the cameras
should follow the IC losers back to camp... possible
Galu IC win?
More evidence for a Foa Foa loss comes from
the new "Evil Russell H" ad (aired 9/9/09): There's a
shot of Russell, Ben and Ashley apparently forming an alliance,
in their IC outfits - another sign of the cameras possibly following
the losing tribe back to camp. More interestingly, the final
shot shows Foa Foa tribe leaving their camp without their tribal
flag. There are other possible explanations for this, of course,
but it's certainly consistent with a departure for Tribal Council.
