January 25, 2006: CBSNews video of
a pre-game press roundtable discussion about Misty, led by
Jeff Probst, with Mara Reinstein (US Weekly), Paul Adler (TV
Guide channel), Shawna Malcom (TV Guide), Dalton Ross (EW),
Jarett Wieselman (In Touch). Transcript:
Jeff
Probst: Misty Giles, rocket
scientist.
Misty (pre-game interview): My name's
Misty Giles. I'm 24, from Dallas, Texas. I'm currently
an electrical engineer.
Dalton Ross: She's
a little feistier. I think she's definitely a little feisty.
I can see her being ultra-competitive. You've got a former
teen beauty queen and that's about as competitive as
it gets. I made her show me the wave by the way. There's
a special pageant wave. Oh yeah. Sort of like back and
forth, and you sort of cup.... So I think she's gonna
be very competitive when she gets out there and I think
she seems pretty athletic, too.
Jeff Probst: Did she talk a lot about her beauty? Because she kept
impressing that on us.
Misty (pre-game interview): Being a female and being
physically attractive and keeping up with myself has
been somewhat of an issue from time to time. In college
it was definitely difficult.
Shawna Malcom: She talked a lot about
how she wasn't a girly girl. But then she said she spent
an hour straightening her hair that morning, so.
Paul Adler: Yeah, she
asked before our interview, um, if she had enough make-up
on and we were like, 'honey, it's the end
of vanity, 'cause you're going to the game.'
Jeff Probst: How
do you think she'll fare in this group?
Paul Adler: I'm not
sure the girls are gonna like her. Um, I really liked
her. I thought she was smart, and, you know. But she's
very bubbly, she's very perky. The other girls are a little
more low-key.
Dalton Ross: I asked
one of them, 'What do you think, have you been sizing
up the other girls? It's sort of, you've been seeing
them, you haven't been able to speak to them yet, but
you've sort of seen them.' And she
goes, 'Well
I think that three of us sort of probably have the same
vibe, and there's one of us that don't.' And I think
Misty might be that one that isn't on, that isn't working
on the same wavelength. Well Courtney was the one who
said it, so....

January 22, 2006: Transcript of Misty-specific
footage from the TV Guide Channel "Survivor: Panama
- Exile Island Preview" (featuring pre-game contestant
interviews and Jeff Probst comments from circa Ep1):
"Danni Boatwright: Misty shares a common
trait with me: both of us have competed in beauty pageants
in the past.
Misty (pre-game interview): That's
helped me develop part of my strategy, in terms of Survivor,
Danni Boatwright: But Misty is more than just a pretty
face. She's also a rocket scientist and missile engineer.
Misty (pre-game interview): Everyone, hands down,
is always shocked to hear that I'm an engineer. I'm used
to being underestimated, and I hope that that continues
throughout this game."

Misty's bio, from the CBS Survivor:
Panama site:
Misty Giles was born in Valdosta,
Georgia. The first of three children in a military
family, she moved frequently during her early years.
She eventually settled in Texas, where she attended
Killeen High School. No stranger to competition,
Giles participated in varsity sports and later won
the title of Miss Texas Teen USA 1999.
Giles' proudest
accomplishment so far has been her ability to support
herself through college and earn a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist
University. She is currently employed as an engineer
by a premiere advanced technology corporation and
is pursuing a master's degree. Additionally, she
is training for her next big challenge, marathon
running.
Giles describes herself as highly adventurous,
determined and sexy. She considers herself a "tomboy in
high heels," as she was once the only girl on
her local little league baseball team. She values
her faith and work ethic as her best personal attributes.
She has a passion for youth and spends time mentoring
young girls to help them prepare to be strong and
confident women. She has also lectured at motivational
and engineering seminars. She enjoys political discussions,
running, kickboxing, playing with her two Boston
Terriers (Harley & Arthur), and most of all,
spending time with her close friends.
Giles believes
her competitive nature and natural problem-solving
skills will help her get to the end of the game.
Competing in the ultimate game of survival and winning
are her motivations for taking on SURVIVOR: PANAMA--EXILE
ISLAND.
Currently single, Giles resides
in Dallas. Her birth date is February 25, 1981. |

| Meredith Chapin,
for the SMU Daily Campus |
March 8, 2002: Extensive article in the SMU
student paper, the SMU Daily Campus. Excerpts below:
"Misty
Giles is breaking through the pageant girl stereotype and proving
that there is more to a queen than her beauty. Her intelligence
and self-sacrifice help her juggle school, pageant life, community
service and three part-time jobs.
'I
know what I want in life,' Giles said, 'and
I am willing to work as hard as it takes to get it.'
Giles
has been a part of the pageant scene since she was 15, when
her basketball team entered her in the Miss Central Texas Teen
USA Pageant. 'My friends just put me in a dress and
put some make-up on me," Giles said. "I had no idea
what I was doing."
Despite her inexperience Giles won
the pageant. She continued on the pageant circuit. In 1999,
she was awarded the title of Miss Texas Teen USA. Last year,
she competed in the Miss Texas USA pageant as Miss Tarrant
County. On Feb. 24, Giles won the title of Miss Ft. Worth USA. This
July she will compete in the Miss Texas USA Pageant, representing
Ft. Worth. The pageant will be held in Lubbock, Texas and will
air on CBS.
... "Linda Warriner,
director of public relations for the Crystal Group admits that
not all the women who come through the pageant circuit are
nice people, but Giles is the exception. 'Misty
is a joy to work with,' Warriner said. 'She
is extremely intelligent, bright and articulate. On top of
all of that, she is quite beautiful.'
But it isn't Giles'
beauty that's helping her complete a bachelor's degree in electrical
engineering and a master's degree in systems engineering simultaneously.
'It is hard to balance school and anything extracurricular
when you are an engineering major,' Lee Livingston, a
junior mechanical engineering major said. 'The study load
can be quite overwhelming.'
... "Giles is the first
person in her family to go to college, and she pays all of
her college tuition and pageant fees herself. To cover these
expenses she holds three jobs. She models for the Dallas
Modeling Group, works at Larry North Fitness Club in Highland
Park Village and is a modeling instructor at Barbizon Modeling
School. She has appeared in print and television ads for Cover
Girl, Venus Swimwear, Clairol hair color and many others.
Giles also volunteers
with Girls Inc., a mentoring program for underprivileged girls.
Matt
Kuberski, junior electrical engineering major and friend, said
'she gives what little free time she has to show these girls
that you can overcome anything in life.' Giles is not
just a volunteer she is a role model. 'She
shows those girls you can grow through adverse conditions and
good things can happen,' Kuberski said. 'She's
always willing to help people.'"

|
1999: At age 18, represents Texas in the Miss
Teen USA pageant, finishing seventh. Below are some
excerpts from a circa-pageant interview:
- "Q. Are you currently attending school or involved in any
educational studies? If so, what are you studying? Where? What
are your eventual goals?
A.
I am planning to study Biomedical and
Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University. I
plan to work for NASA as an Astronaut. I would love
to explore the universe in depth."
- "Q.
What
have you learned about yourself during the past year?
A. One
year ago, I did not realize the profound impact that one
person can have on another. I learned this valuable lesson
through the tragic death of my best friend, Hannah."
Q.
What
is your most treasured possession?
A. As an Army brat who moved
too many times, I learned to value the enduring nature of
my relationship with family and friends over all material
possessions."
- "Q. Describe
how you envision yourself in five years.
A.
In five years I will
have graduated with a BS in biomedical engineering with a
minor in psychology. Having continued to work my way through
college by performing as a model/actress, I will be entering
graduate school -- my eye firmly fixed on NASA."
