Cook Islands episode 1 detailed Arrival spoilers/ speculation |
The
cast will arrive in and be tossed off of a sailing ship (at
left), in a feeble attempt to tie in Aitutaki's tenuous historical
ties to the Captain Bligh/ mutiny on the Bounty story. Or
perhaps more accurately, to recreate the opening of the
far more popular first Survivor series.
Overhead shots of the ship in question
have popped up in CBS TV ads, with rafts for the four tribes
attached to it: red for the Aitutaki (Latino) tribe; yellow
for Manihiki (African-American); green for Puka Puka (Asian-American);
and blue for Rarotonga (Caucasian - tribe names from TV
Guide, posted at Sucks by MayanSun).
About the arrival, Jeff Probst has admitted that
it was intended to recreate the opening to the first Survivor
series: "We went back to season one and did the same open
because that was the best open we ever did -- put people
on a boat and give 'em a couple of minutes to get off."
Our guess is that, unlike the past two
seasons, there will not be a challenge immediately following
the cast introduction. Instead, we'll see the four tribes
jumping ship, separating into their tribes, and rowing
off to their camps. Which would explain why all 20 contestants
are seen in camp in the pre-game press footage.
Among other things made clear by a commercial
run in the week before the premiere, is that the contestants
are given food (at least bananas and chickens) as an option
before disembarking. The Puka Puka tribe appears to get both.
At least that explains how the word "chickens" got into
the title.
