For
the first time (as far as we can tell), and fittingly in
the birthplace of gunpowder, Survivor has the contestants
set off fireworks on the night of July 4th.
Pictures eventually. We learn this from the CBS-provided
behind-the-scenes Jeff Probst video,
which show this challenge to be called "Great Balls of Fire,"
and apparently shot at night at the tribal council location
(vidcaps here).
SEG pyrotechnician Simon Ross described
this challenge on the TV Guide channel preview: "One of the
challenges... involves picking up fireballs with
chopsticks, putting them into a trough. It rolls down,
falls into a wok filled with flash powder, which sets off
a fuse, and then sets off fireworks."
Also from the production office's
calendar,
as pointed out at Sucks by birdlady,
the reward is "local
fishermen with cormorants." As mentioned by
Probst in his pre-show teleconference (as
transcribed by SurvivorFever), "At a certain point there's
a reward that lets a family come in and show you how you
need to fish to get fish out of the water." (We guess
this explains the fisherman with the cormorants in the pre-show
commercials, shown below).
As for the challenge itself, there appear to be three
flash pots to light up per tribe. The difficulty in the challenge appears to
be that each of the two "chopsticks" is held by a different person. That makes
coordination and working together the key to successfully moving the flaming
balls from one trough to the other. Still, the "both tribes must go to Tribal
Council" hype is a bit silly, since CBS themselves revealed the challenge location. |
So who wins? Fei Long has a slight lead
in the shot above (Zhan Hu is only just lighting their first
yellow pot, in the foreground, while Fei Long's first red
one is already lit). Not that this necessarily means much. In
the new ads, a female voice says "they're fishing birds"
(Courtney? Maybe even Denise?) and Aaron has a confessional
proclaiming something "the most bizarre thing I've ever seen."
Could be a reaction to the fishing, but even so, he also
could be the kidnappee, in theory. Still, slight hints that
Fei Long might win.
Update: Probst to the rescue. The Yahoo!TV preview of
Ep4 shows Fei Long enjoying their reward. Pictures below:
