Survivor: China episode 1 detailed arrival spoilers/ speculation
With only sixteen contestants, two tribes, and no exile island, you'd think they'd need some way to fill the time at the start of the show. One option might be a reward challenge. We'd also suggest character development, but we know that's just silly.
Instead, it looks like they went for something we usually criticize them for ignoring entirely: local culture. So we can't complain too loudly. From E!'s cast reveal article:
"The new season kicks off Sept. 20, with the castaways starting their journey in the center of downtown Shanghai. From there, they'll decamp to HuangPu Mountain's Mi Tuo Temple where they will participate in a Buddhist ceremony after which they will be forced to abandon their worldly possessions.
They will then be dropped off on two separate islands with only the clothes on their backs and divided into two tribes: Fei Long (translation: Flying Dragon) and Zhan Hu (translation: Fighting Tiger). Each tribe will be given a copy of Sun Tzu's The Art of War for motivation and helpful hints on how to play the game."

So that's why you later see the contestants in camp, wearing (a subset of) the same clothes they wore to the temple. Not that this should particularly surprise anyone at this point.
