Jeff Probst cast assessments
Added: September 4, 2012

Jeff ProbstFrom MSN.com's Meet the Cast gallery (by Minh Nguyen):

"Jeff Kent says: 'I hope these people realize they're only going to get half of the million dollars, so you're playing for $500,000 cash. That's not going to make a difference in my life. Everybody says I'm going to be cutthroat for a million bucks. There's value in that absolutely. There's more value in the challenge of competing and being called the champion.'

Jeff Probst says: 'Jeff Kent could win the game. He'd be on Survivor even if he wasn't a Major League Baseball player. He's the kind of guy we look for: big, strong, a little bit of a hot head, has opinions, loves strategies, can do well in the challenges. He's an interesting guy, and people are going to enjoy watching him.'"

Jeff Kent: Official Survivor: Philippines contestant
Added: August 23, 2012

Excerpts from his CBS.com Survivor: Philippines bio page:

"Occupation: Retired Major League Baseball Player. I played for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Personal Claim to Fame: Being a husband and a father to four kids with the ability to provide them with every opportunity to be successful.
Inspiration in Life: My dad is my hero for instilling in me the desire to be the best you can in all that you do, and setting a great example for a happy family.
Hobbies: Hunting, motocross and golf.
Pet Peeves: Stupid people and people who talk too much.
3 Words to Describe You: Competitive, resilient and hard-headed.
If You Could Have 3 Things on The Island What Would They Be and Why?
1) A lounge chair to lounge in and sleep in.
2) My iPod to motivate me and tune things out.
3) A pillow to put my most valuable body part on a soft spot.
Survivor Contestant You Are Most Like: Colby Donaldson - for our athletic ability, southern charm and gamesmanship.
Reason for Being on Survivor: To challenge my talents and survival skills under isolated circumstances, and to prove to my family that being resilient pays off.
Why You Think You’ll 'Survive' Survivor: I enjoy hunting and fishing. I know how to cook outdoors, and I’m good at improvising.
Why You Think You Will Be the Sole Survivor: With my survival skills and instincts, living on an island for 39 days will be easy. Utilizing the other survivors in alliances and/or challenges will take skills that I’ve mastered throughout my baseball career. Motivating and manipulating people is what I did best in the locker room and on the field."

From his EW.com pre-game interview, by Dalton Ross:

"'I will win Survivor because I'm the best competitor out here,' says Jeff, and considering that he's a former National League MVP, the baseball star may just have a point. The longtime Survivor fan plans to take his intensity from the baseball diamond to the island. 'I've been competing my whole life. That's what I do. I'm not here for any TV stardom. Not here to look good on TV.' His biggest obstacle, however, may be his fame. How will Jeff handle it if another player recognizes him?"

Jeff Kent: potential Survivor: Philippines contestant
Added: July 13, 2012

Summary of evidence for Jeff Kent being on Survivor: Philippines.

- At some point circa the end of filming, longtime spoiling pariah Jim Early/"missyae" mentioned that Jeff Kent was on Survivor. Word trickled in to Sucks, with random posts buried in other longer threads. As of 5/25/12, it was already common knowledge (here).

- (6/21/12) A flurry of "news" articles saying "Jeff Kent may be on Survivor" emerge, all based on Survivorfever.net saying missyae says he is a contestant. None bother asking Kent himself, or Survivor execs. Or asking what a missyae is.

- Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News (7/1/12): The Giants held a reunion for the 2002 World Series-losing team (which included Kent). Which allowed some actual reporting: "Kent was more cagey regarding reports that he will appear in the next season of the CBS reality show Survivor.

'I've watched that show for a long time,' he said. 'I'm going to watch come September to see if I'm on it or not.'" [Sounds like a yes.]

Who is Jeff Kent?

- Born in Bellflower, CA (Los Angeles), went to college at UC Berkeley. Best known in baseball for his time with the Giants and Dodgers. So naturally, he now lives on ranch just outside of Austin, Texas. Although that would explain the mustache.

- Played second base in the major leagues for six teams (Blue Jays, Mets, Indians, Giants, Astros, Dodgers) over 17 seasons, amassing the most home runs hit by a 2B (351, he hit 26 more while playing other positions). Voted National League MVP in 2000. In 2002, famously got into a dugout fight with teammate Barry Bonds. Kent retired in 2009, the year before the Giants won the World Series. Fun fact: the last season he made less than $1 million was way back in 1995.

- In 2009, he was on some ABC show called "Superstars," where he was paired with Ali Landry. No, we don't remember hearing about it, either.
