- castaway208 (10/7/11) at SurvivorSucks started the guesswork off by posting various clues about Colton, based on his name. Fairly rapidly, astroline (10/7/11) identified him, and posted a link to Colton's facebook, noting his (formerly publicly visible) listing of Survivor as a favorite show and facebook friendship with Laura Morett.
- Shortly thereafter, Polonium (10/7/11) found Colton's Sears video (archived at Video-Survivor.com) from December, 2010. In it, Colton gave himself this two-sentence description: "Bow bitches! You're never going to find another openly gay Homecoming King from SOUTH ALABAMA!" He also says, "I was on a radio show where people actually called in, Survivor fans called in, and tried to stump me with a Survivor trivia question.... I know everything about this show. I am the ultimate Survivor fan."
- The radio show he appears to have been on was BBAD Radio (Big Brother After Dark). Host Lorraine posted: "See if you guys recognize anyone from this rumored cast list for season 24 of Survivor!!!! The age is wrong but thats him! He is a long time friend and regular of BBAD Radio!!"
- Several other Sucks posters (patrickofthewhite, dannystultz) later reported knowing Colton from various other reality discussion boards and online games.
